Deadstock, Mass Mortalities and Disposal: An Introduction
Deadstock and mass mortalities are two scenarios which can be challenging to manage depending on the scale of the disposal required. One example is the recent avian influenza outbreak in the province. Some producers were forced to quickly respond to disease in their barn, and come up with a plan to safely take care of the mortalities.
This required close contact with their marketing board representatives, their veterinarian, CFIA and more in order to follow the appropriate protocols for managing the outbreak on their farm. A second example could be an environmental disaster such as a tornado or more commonly a fire that causes mortalities or injury to some or all of the flock.
The following section provides insight and planning tools to help you plan for emergency disposals of various types to help ensure maximum welfare for your flock.
